Jai Shree Krishna Pyara vaishnavs Very Happy
I am sure most of you know that i am a member of Pushtidasji's Friday satsangs and as I have attended more satstangs my curiosity and love for Thakorji has grown. Thus I want to adopt the teachings of Pushtimarg and follow it as best I can. Pushtimarg is the path of grace fundamentally based on love however with it one should have etiquette. So that leads me to question. I don’t actually know the real reason for not eating onions and garlic?? Is it just because Thakorji dislikes the taste and smell?? Or is there more to it?? What other foods are we not supposed to eat?? Please don’t think I am complaining because the truth of the matter is the closer i feel to Thakorji the easier the idea of giving up unessential foods like garlic and onion become. I know Krishna seva has many members who i am sure have masses of knowledge, please vaishnavs share your knowledge, be active readers and Satsang Tibari can be like our lil party Wink
JAI SHREE KRISHNA!!!! Very Happy

Palnaji JSK,

Other than making your breath smell, I think the real reason for not eating garlic and onion is because they stimulate different feelings. Please someone correct me if I am wrong but these foods make one more angry and lustful.

I also heard from a lovely Vaishnav that we can't eat water mellons too. Not sure why though.

Jai Shri Krishna,

Pushtidasji will come with exact answer. but this website though from a buddisht perspective is similar to Vaishnav thoughts: http://www.greengourmet.com.au/garlic_onion.htm

also to that list we can add mushrooms safely, the prime reason being that they are considered Tamsi/Rajsi food, i.e. increasing the mode of ignorace/passion.

Jai Shri Krishna

Jai Shri Krishna,

Most important reason is that those are Tamasi Vegetables.
One should eat more of Sattvik Goon.

Tamsi will take us away from our Shri Thakurji plus bad (Foul) smell. So one should go to Thakurji with good clean mouth and body also (not smelling of perspiration etc) must be clean.

Jai Shree Krishna

The link which Gopalbhai has mentioned, it only describes much of the Vedic sightation and explains why one does not eat tamasi food according to Vedic systems.

Shree Mahrajshree also goes on to say that in Pushtimarga we have no solid and valid reason why we do not eat Onions and Garlick. Although Aapshree does describe in one sentence, a quote from Shree Mahaprabhuji, that these foods are tamas. We do not have a proper authorative summary on why we are not supposed to eat these Tamsi food except the vedic explanation.

I remember an incident about Mahaprabhuji where he removed Onions from his thali and since then no one in Pushtimarg ate the onion?

Does anyone recall this prasang?

Jai Shri KRishna,

On further investigation I found this

There are many other things mentioned in Shiva Purana but who follows
them? For example, in the Shiva Purana the Supreme Lord says:

dvAparAdau yuge bhUtvA
kalayA mAnuSAadiSu
svAgamaiH kalpitais tvaM ca
janAn mad-vimukhAn kuru

"In the beginning of the dvapara-yuga, directed by My orders, many
sages will bewilder the people in general by mayavadi philosophy."

Still these people are being bewildered by the influence of maya.
Actually, they calculate Ekadasi tithi based on the movement of sun
while Vaishanavas calculate based on the movement of moon.
Regarding onion and garlic, as per the story below (the scriptural
source is not known) onion and garlic came from the dead body of a
murdered cow and therefore they are considered like eating meat. They
break the non-vegetarian principle from the shastric point of view.
Strict vegetarians don't eat onion nor garlic. Since meat is tamasic,
onions and garlic are also tamasic and rajasic food. They may have
some medicinal value like even wine is used in medicines sometimes.

Thus they are taboo for followers of Vedic culture.

"Once, in Satya Yuga the rishis were performing gomedha and asvamedha
sacrifices for the welfare of the whole universe. A cow or a horse
would be cut into pieces and placed in the fire. Afterwards the rishis
would utter mantras and the same animal would come alive in a
beautiful young body.

One time the rishi who was about to perform a gomedha sacrifice, his
wife was pregnant. She had a very strong desire to eat and she had
heard that if, during pregnancy one has a desire to eat and does not
fullfill this, then the baby that will be born will always have saliva
coming from its mouth. Very strange, she desired strongly to eat meat,
thus she decided to keep one piece of meat of the cow's body that was
offered in sacrifice. She hid it and was making a plan to eat it very
soon. At that time the rishi was finishing the sacrifice and uttered
all the mantras for the new young cow to come to life. However when he
saw the new cow, he noticed that there was a little part missing from
her left side. He went into meditation and realized that his wife had
taken away a piece of meat during the sacrifice. Now his wife also
understood what happened and quickly threw the meat far away.
Due to the effect of the mantras uttered by the rishi there was now
life in this piece of meat. Then the blood of this meat became red
lentils, the bones became garlic and the meat became onions. Thus
these foods are never taken by any Vaishnava situated in the mode of
goodness as Vaishnavas should be because it is not considered by us as
offerable due to its association as a non-vegetarian food. Plus it is
in the mode of ignorance."
