Jai Shri Krishna,

Also special thread is used while making the Kanthi one cannot use the nylon thread etc.

Also flower malas one just cannot buy from outside readymade unless one is sure what thread was used so vaishnavs please be carefull in what we offer as it must be with proper care and alokik bhav. This is my opinion.

Jai Shree Krishna

The special tread used to make the kanthi, what is it made of? How do you know if the special tread is used to make the kanthi or flower mala?

Jai Shri Krishna,

just as a guess, i think the 'special' thread is made of cotton....

The following is taken from "Pushti Parimal" E-book by PPG 108 Shri Dwarkeshlalji Mahoday.

It is compulsory for vaishnavas to wear a tulsi mala at all times. In case the thread of tulsi mala breaks, one should not take food or water until wearing another one. The reason for this is given in the scriptures called 'Padma Purana', where it is stated that for a vaishnav, food taken without wearing a tulsi mala is comparable to excrement, water taken is comparable to urine and other liquids taken are comparable to blood. If a vaishnav is without a tulsi mala even for a moment, he becomes an enemy of Vishnu and therefore one should wear it at all times

27.One can not do Prabhu's seva without wearing a tulsi mala. It is compulsory for every member of the family participating in seva to wear a tulsi mala.

28. Women and girls in monthly period must bathe after the elapse of three nights, wash their hairs with soap, shampoo or herbal shampoo removing all the oil, remove the old tulsi mala and wear a new one before returning to seva. One cannot do seva wearing the old tulsi mala.

29. One should wear a new tulsi mala after taking a bath under the following circumstances :-

when the period of sutak or vruddhi is over.

when the impure period after delivery has passed and one has bathed.

if one has touched a person in sutak.

if one has touched a dead body.

if one has gone to the place of burning dead bodies.

if one has touched a female in monthly period.

if one has touched a woman who has given delivery within 20 days or a new born infant upto 10 days.

After the passing of the impure period following a solar or lunar eclipse. The old tulsi mala should be dropped in a natural body of water viz lake, pond, river, ocean etc... or under a tree.

Jay Shree Krishna

Thanku Jagdishji for this information. I was aware that one should change the kanthi after some of the situations you have highlighted but does everyone abide by changing their kanthi after all the circumstances that have been outlined?

This may sound silly... but practically, it may not be possible for women to change their kanthi every month, purely because the tulsi mala is difficult to obtain? One would need dozens upon dozens in stock! Laughing

Jai Shri Krishna

Nitalji, you have a valid point about practicality... but then this could be seen as "Tap" or "sadhna" or test of endurance...for our maarg Cool

Vaishnavs who know the circumstances can (and usually do) always "pre-order" them in advance and certainly keep a stock of them.

This is a very important requirement and it is not difficult to fulfill. But it does require some planning.

One is able to obtain kanthis from the havelis or directly from india or even from one's guru-ghar and there are even those who make them themselves from the prescribed methods...
- The interesting thing about the regulations in our maarg are that they maybe a little tricky or difficult to implement at times but they are not impractical.

-hoping, the more experienced amongst us will enlighten further

Jai Shri Krishna,

Yes, Jagdishbhai well said. The thread should be of plain cotton thread only (nothing mixed and not even nylon). Preferable should be white.

In Vanarasi there are 3 Bethak's of Shri Mhaprabhuji and do you know none will accept the readymade flower mala if you buy it outside ? The reason being they say that the thread used is impure. But they will gladly accept all the loose flowers you take with you and infact the vaishnav ladies there will immediately help you make the malas after washing the flowers.

Also at home one must be careful while making the mala as the reel of thread must be new (never used) so one can make the mala and please keep this reel seperately and not mix with your daily use or personal use or open new one again.

(Cannot use used items for Shri Thakurji as we all know that so it applies here too.)

Best place to buy kanthi is from pushtimargiya vaishnav store in Mathura or at Nathduara so we are sure about the thread.

In Nathduara temple also they welcome loose flowers and if you go to phool ghar (Mala making place upstairs)you will see vaisnavs preparing the malas with their mouth covered with a mouth piece.

Jai Shree Krishna

Can someone please explain what are the cosequence of going without the kanthi whole day, but not aware of it?

For example it comes off whilst getting dressed and are not aware of it and you eat and drink and go about your daily life. One is not suppose to take a single step without kanthi.

Jai Shri Krishna

Vasant Bhai, thank you for enhancing the details further by such wonderful explanations.

Nirupa ji, You have raised an interesting query and this is just a personal thought to your query and by no means a 100% solution - i guess the best thing would be to consult one's guruji.... so we hope the experienced ones amongst us will help clarify further

Firstly Thakorji is param krupalu and dayalu and He is extremely tolerant of His vaishnavs. so i feel like saying that He does not count such mistakes. However if we are to assume that Thakorji will "dissolve" this dosh/mistake of accidently not wearing the kanthi, then we should also feel that once we realise the mistake we should do something appropriate to "make-up" to Thakorji for He would/might have become Shramit by 'helping' us with our dilema.

- There is an example of "Shram Bhog" ... ? (This is not the solution but is merely here as an example)

Secondly, as you are already aware of His Naam.. and that once you offer the food/drink etc to Thakorji before accepting it yourself, it is prasad... which is already purified by Him, Hence doing constant Naam Sumiran (and in our case we are prescribed the mantra by our Guruji) is also very critical because it "saves" us at every step we take daily.

Jay Shree Krishna

Thanku Jagdishji for your insight..it's true, it may not be easy practically but if one prepares and plans in advance, it is not impossible - like most things in life! Wink

Jai Shri Krishna,

Nitalji, you are very welcome. It is not really my insight as these things are said by others .... maybe not in the same way.
